A VERY RARE SILVER-MOUNTED BOMBAY ARMY SENIOR OFFICER'S SWORD OF TULWAR FORM
BY HENRY WILKINSON, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 21801 FOR 1879
With broad double-edged blade etched on each side with panels of scrollwork inhabited by cornucopia, silver hilt of characteristic form with foliate engraving, and black-leather-covered scabbard with silver mounts engraved en suite
29 1/2 in. (75cm.) blade
The blade signed 'HENRY / WILKINSON / PALL MALL / LONDON', London silver hallmarks for 1876, silver maker's mark of James Barclay Hennell of London
Reference to the Wilkinson records indicates that five swords (numbers 21800-21804) were ordered by the Commander in Chief of the Bombay Army. Only 21800 was described in detail and mention is made of a "silver nickel plate" scabbard whilst the present example has silver mounts with the same hallmarks and maker's marks as the hilt
