A FINELY CARVED ZITAN CORNER-LEG SIDE TABLE, BANZHOU

The two-panel top is set within a rectangular frame with notched corners and beaded edge, and is supported on a narrow waist carved with archaistic scroll above a band of lotus lappets and shaped aprons further carved with archaistic scroll and ruyi heads. The whole is raised on legs of square section, framed by spandrels carved with archaistic scroll, and terminating in upturned ruyi-form feet.

Lot Essay

Furniture adorned with archaistic elements, including stylized archaistic scrolls, gained popularity during the middle Qing dynasty, and the production of this type continued well into the 19th century. A similar zitan table of larger size, also dating to the 19th century, and with elaborate carving and upturned ruyi-form feet was sold at Christie's New York, 20 March 2014, lot 2306.
