Lot Essay

Christiaan Hendrik van der Feltz (1746-1793) was a major in the Orange Friesland regiment of Life Guards, he was killed at the battle of Lincelles at Lille Aug. 18, 1793. His regiment was based in Leeuwarden 1784–90 and Zwolle thereafter, L. Lucius was an artist working in Leeuwarden at the same time. The group are documented on the RKD Netherlands Institute for Art History image database with the same attribution. The database also includes a portrait of Anna Jacoba Wilhelmina van Aylva (1778-1814) by the same hand which is in fact fully attributed and signed 'L. Lucius' and which is held in the Fries Museum, Leeuwarden.
