TOMMASO PORCACCHI (c.1530-1585)

L'Isole piu famose del Mondo. Venice: heirs of Simone Galignani, 1590. 2° (298 x 198mm). Engraved architectural title, 46 (of 47) half-page engraved maps by Girolamo Porro, engraved intials, head- and tail-pieces, printer's device at end. (Lacking conjugate leaves I2 and I5, these replaced with ?18th-century manuscript fair copy, lacking the map of Cerigo that should appear on I5v, occasional browning, spotting and staining.) Later vellum, lettered in gilt and black on spine (some time recased and endpapers renewed). Provenance: Gio. Annibale Valentini (late 17th-/early 18th-century ownership inscriptions and pen trials to F2v and L2r).

THIRD ENLARGED EDITION of Porcacchi's beautifully illustrated 'island book'. The first edition of 1572 included only 30 maps. This edition is similar to the 1575 second edition, but 'Descrittione dell'Istria' and 'Descrittione dell'isola d'Elandia, isola de Gotti' are added with another map. Included are 18 maps of the islands of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean and 8 of the Americas. American subjects include Temistican (Mexico), Spagnuola, North America, Cuba, Jamaica and San Giovanni. The world map is a reduced rendering of the Paolo Forlani map produced in 1565. Adams P1906; Nordenskiöld II, 189; Sabin 64150; Shirley 127-128 (world maps); Burden I, 42 (map of North America).
