XVI 2006 loosely inserted), 8° (212 x 135mm). (Vol. IV severely waterstained.) Contemporary black half calf (generally worn, save for the later volumes) and original blue cloth with dust-jacket (vol. XVII). Provenance: Maylebone Cricket Club (Vols. I-III presentation copies from Arthur Haygarth to the Club; Haygarth’s pencil signature in vol. IV; vols. 1-VI either with MCC bookplate or ownership stamp on half-title and title; vols. I-XIV sold by Christie’s in the MCC Bicentenary Auction, 13 April 1987, lot 361). PRESENTATION COPIES OF VOLUMES I-III FROM ARTHUR HAYGARTH TO THE MCC, vol. I also containing corrections in his hand. Although published in 1862-63, these volumes were presented by Haygarth, as the compiler, in 1865. It is an extraordinary fact that he gained so little public recognition for his lifetime’s work. The publication carries Frederick Lillywhite’s name up to volume IV, volumes V-VI then become ‘Arthur Haygarth’s Cricket Scores’, but thereafter the work is called the ‘Marylebone Club Cricket Scores and Biographies’, the Club bearing the cost of publication.
