COVARRUBIAS, Pedro de. Remedio de jugadores. Burgos: Alonso de Melgar, 1519. 4° (192 x 144mm). Large woodcut device on title, woodcut historiated and ornamental initials. (Tiny chip to upper margin of title, light worming to margin of some leaves, occasional light waterstains.) Later vellum, manuscript title on spine, original ties (light soiling). Provenance: unidentified library stamp and inscriptions on title, a few marginal annotations.
EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION. Covarrubias provides 'reglas y preceptos venatorios' for the different methods of hunting, which are examined from a theological viewpoint. He also treats of more ferocious animals and those who fought them in the roman circus. Bull-fighting is condemned on the grounds of danger to humans rather than compassion for the bull. Among the other recreations considered are chess, cards, dice and dancing. ABPC/AE online record the sale of only one copy of the present edition (in 1980). Gutierrez de la Vega pp. 134-35; Palau 64162; this first edition not in Salva or Schwerdt.
