ALVAREZ BRAVO, Manuel (1902-2002). La buena fama durmiendo, 1939. Printed c. 1980s.

Gelatin silver print (image: 185 x 244 mm; sheet: 204 x 255 mm). Signed (‘M Alvarez Bravo’), titled (‘México’), and annotated (‘0x2’) in pencil on the verso.

ONE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S MOST FAMOUS IMAGES, AND ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF HIS SURREALIST MODE. ‘Good Reputation Sleeping’ is full of tension: between the ponderous eroticism of the image and the ambiguity of its proverb-like title; between the simultaneous dress and undress; between the hard setting and the soft body; it is a scene at once inviting and forbidding, as the prickly cacti in the foreground remind the viewer.
