ALPHABET -- A fine printed erotic alphabet, hand-coloured throughout. France, late 19th century.
Small folio. 26 etched plates (c.150 x c.150 mm to the plate mark) on strong wove paper watermarked Ganson & Montgolfier (244 x 182 mm). (Occasional light spotting.) Mounted on stubs in 20th-century red quarter leather possibly re-using earlier boards, lettered up the spine in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed).
AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A HAND-COLOURED EROTIC ALPHABET, with the letters formed by assorted amorous groupings, some more athletic than others. The Milton Luros collection included an alphabet of similar description (Parke-Bernet, 27 April 1971, lot 1).
