Instruction libertine ou Dialogues entre Charles et Justine sur la Théorie physique de l'Amour et les diverses manières de s'en procurer les plaisirs matériels. Sadopolis [Brussels]: [Jean-Pierre Blanche] 1860 [but c.1868].

Octavo (205 x 145 mm). Lithographed text throughout, title printed in red and black. Extra-illustrated with 18 engravings (c.105 x c.70 mm) printed on india and mounted on card, and 4 pen-and-ink drawings to style. (Some light browning, some scattered spotting.) Tan half leather by Féchoz, spine with raised bands, one compartment with blue morocco label gilt, the others centred with a floral ornament in gilt, top edge gilt, deckle fore-edges (corners rubbed, light soiling). Provenance: Milton Luros (his sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, 27 April 1971, lot 122) -- J.B. Rund (bookplate).

RARE FIRST EDITION. ONE OF ONLY 50 COPIES, THIS ONE EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with prints and drawings from L’Aretin françois. Pia calls this manual of libertine education ‘one of the rarest works; we encountered it only once in half a century of visiting bookstores’; and Eros invaincu calls it, rather more enthusiastically, ‘simply the world’s rarest erotic book’. WorldCat locates only one copy, at the British Library; not in the Bibliothèque nationale de France; AE and ABPC record only two other copies at auction. According to Dutel this manual in dialogue form was probably commissioned by Hankey from Benoit (d.1863). Copy number 43. Eros invaincu 74 ; Gay-Lemonnyer II, 668; Perceau, 376; Pia Enfer, 676; Pauvert II, p. 625.
