A THANGKA DEPICTING SHRI DEVI
TIBET, 18TH CENTURY
She is seated astride her mule that is crossing a sea of blood. He is decorated with snake-ornaments and an eye at his hind part. The protective female deity brandishes the khatvanga with her right hand while the left supports the blood-filled kapala. She is clad in a tiger-skin and scarf floating around her shoulders. Her wrathful face displays protruding eyes and open mouth showing teeth and fangs. The flaming hairdo is secured with a tiara decorated with five skulls and topped by a peacock parasol. Behind her is a flaming halo. Makaravaktra and Simhavaktra are flanking her placed against a red flaming mandorla. The upper register sees the white Sarasvati playing the lute in the centre. Twelve female divinities riding various animals belong to her retinue. All are holding their prescribed attributes and set in a mountainous landscape. The lower register sees three kapalas bearing different offerings.
