A THANGKA DEPICTING FOUR ARHATS
TIBET, CA. 17TH CENTURY
The upper section depicts Panthaka seated on an elaborate throne with his right hand in vitarkamudra while the left holds a manuscript. Nagasena placed on a bench resting against a cushion flanks him. The former prince holds the khakhara or priest-staff and the vase containing the life-elixir. The lower section shows Pindolabharadvaja placed against a rock formation holding manuscript and alms-bowl. The other corner has Abheda who holds the stupa in both hands. One upper corner displays the red coloured Amitayus. All arhats are clad in monk’s garments, surrounded by worshippers or attendants and placed in a mountainous landscape.
