The sitter is most likely the wife of Issac Baugh, Secretary to the Supreme Council in Bengal who gave evidence in the trial of Warren Hastings. A Mrs Baugh is listed as having sat to George Engleheart in 1788 and 1790 (see G. C. Williamson and H. L. D. Engleheart, George Engleheart 1750-1829, Miniature Painter to George III, London, 1902, p. 88).
