While there are many representations for the trickster god, or orisha, named Eshu, normally these are in the form of diviner's staffs. The offered work is a rare representation of this god as the finial of a headdress. Here, he has all of the iconic treatments which show is ability to see into different worlds as symbolized by the salient, phallic, crest with two peering faces. Of the headdresses known representing Eshu, these are worn for the Egungun masquerades and rituals which honor the ancrestral lineages, and few have the highly complex and architectural quality of this fine work. Bien qu'il existe de nombreuses représentations du dieu farceur, ou orisha, appelé Eshu, elles prennent habituellement la forme de bâtons de devin. L'oeuvre étudiée ici est une représentation rare de ce dieu, figuré par l'extrémité d'une coiffe. Ici, le dieu dispose de toutes les caractéristiques lui permettant de voir dans différents mondes: une crête saillante de forme phallique avec deux visages observateurs. Les coiffes connues représentant Eshu de ce type étaient portées lors des mascarades Egungun et durant les rituels qui honoraient les lignées ancestrales. Peu présentent une telle sculpture architecturalement complexe.
