These studies are part of a series of drawings of which some were engraved by Mattheus de Sallieth (1749-1791) for Verzameling van verschillende gekleede mans- en vrouwenstanden, ter oefening van jonge schilders en liefhebbers, first published by Johannes Immerzeel, Rotterdam, 1818.

The study of the man carrying the magic lantern is among the earliest known depiction of a portable camera obscura. A camera obscura is depicted in a drawing by Francesco Guardi from the Van Regteren Altena Collection to be offered at Christie's, Paris, 25 March 2015.
