Lot Essay

A cousin of the well-known painter Cornelis Kruseman (1797-1857), Jan Diederikus Kruseman was an amateur painter, draughtsman and printmaker, and an entrepreneur. From 1862 to 1881 he was the administator of a sugar factory at Soerabaja, Java, in the Dutch East-Indies, during which he presumably executed the present work.
