Lot Essay

In the 1976-77 catalogue, this drawing was given to Leendert van der Cooghen (1632-1681), a wealthy skilful amateur who executed drawings, prints and paintings. However, in her 2005 article, Baukje Coenen argued that it could also be by Cornelis Visscher (1628-1658) or, following a suggestion by Marijn Schapelhouman, a late work by Cornelis Saftleven (1607-1681).
