Lot Essay

Only three signed works by the artist are recorded, including an Adoration of the Shepherds in the Church of Saint Etiènne, Toulouse. Sylvain Kerspern has identified a number of other works by this artist including a pair of paintings offered in these Rooms, 24 May 1991, lot 14, as 'Circle of Peter Brueghel III', which relate closely to the present picture both in figure type and composition.
