Lot Essay

NUMBER 202 OF AN EDITION OF 275. These extraordinarily fine impressions were made after etchings created between 1783 and 1786, and portray the edifices, gardens and palace grounds constructed from 1737 to 1766 for the Qianlong emperor and painted by the Jesuit missionary Guiseppe Castiglione, known as Lang Shi Ning.

A very similar album, but incomplete (19 instead of 20 plates), was sold in Christie's South Kensington, sale of Travel, Science and Natural History, 10 October 2013, lot 101.
