Lot Essay

A Tingqua album of this quality is rather rare and exceptional. Guan Lianchang, more famous by the name 'Tingqua', was the best known watercolourist working in Canton during the mid 19th Century. Tingqua was taught by his elder brother Lamqua, the latter primarily a portraitist in oils like his father Guan Zuolin, before he set up his own studio at 16 China Street, Canton. Distinguishing himself from his brother, Tingqua (and his studio) specialised in works on paper in watercolour and bodycolour depicting local subjects for the Western market. The work of Tingqua and his studio is remarkable for its bright palette, detail and outstanding finesse.
