The figure is shown seated on a rocky outcrop, wearing belted armour. He is holding a manuscript in his left hand, and is grasping his long beard with his right. Extremely finely rendered, he is depicted with a contemplative expression, wearing a crown-like headdress. A maker's mark, Zeng Longsheng, is stamped on the base.

Zeng Longsheng (1901-1964) was a famous potter at the Jingdezhen kilns who specialized in figural sculptures. The present figure is probably Yue Fei, one of the most popular military generals of the Southern Song dynasty who became a symbol of courage and loyalty in Chinese culture.
