Glazed sides and rear door, the silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic five minute markers, fleur-de-lis half hour markers, blued steel hands and cherub head spandrels, signed to the lower edge 'Joseph Knibb London', latched dial pillars; the movement joined by six latched, vase-shaped pillars, with two-train gut fusees and verge escapement, double-six countwheel with strike on two bells, turn catches and later brackets, the tulip engraved backplate signed 'Joseph Knibb Londini Fecit', bob pendulum and holdfast, two case keys

Lot Essay

Joseph Knibb's used his 'double-six' striking to preserve the power in the hour spring. With this method the clock strikes the first six hours then reverts to one strike for seven o'clock and strikes six times at twelve o'clock.
Joseph Knibb (b. 1640 - d. 1711), worked in Oxford and from about 1670 in London and retired to Hanslope.
