BOSSOLI, Carlo (1815-1884)
Strada Ferrata da Torino a Genova. Torino: G.B. Maggi, 1853]. 2° (608 x 448mm). 14 tinted lithographed plates (of 16) by W. Simpson, E. Walker, T. Picken and R.K. Thomas after Bossoli, printed by Day and Son, hand-coloured and heightened with varnish. (Large waterstains and spotting at plate margins, lacks title and plate list.) Publisher’s red half morocco, with title and imprint stamped in gilt on upper cover (front cover stained, spine and corners worn, gutta percha perished leaving plates loose).
A RARE AND STUNNING COLLECTION of mountain and river views along the Turin to Genoa route. Long bridges and dramatic tunnels feature strongly in the plates whose publication coincided with the completion of the double-track railway in 1853. Construction had begun in 1845, and the 3,259 metre-long Giovi Tunnel, built in order to cross the Apennines, was then the longest in the world. The plates were printed in England, and Abbey gives details of the English issue, Views on the Railway between Turin and Genoa. AE records the sale of only one copy, at Christie’s Rome in 2002. cf. Abbey Travel I, 176.
