Lot Essay

This painting was originally acquired by Mr. Yang in the 19th century and has been a part of his family’s collection for more than 150 years. The Yangs were wealthy landowners and shopkeepers in Shanxi and were related to the well-known Qiao, Cao, and Chang families. A great art aficionado and a collector of numerous paintings, Mr. Yang took the name “Modian,” which means “Ink Summit.”  The current owner, Yang Modian’s great-great-granddaughter, currently resides in the United States.
