A LUCKNOW ENAMELLED DAGGER (KHANJAR)
NORTH INDIA, 18TH CENTURY
The double-edged watered-steel straight blade with pronounced medial ridge and armour-piercing tip, later gilt cusped chape, the waisted hilt and sheath covered in silver and decorated in polychrome enamels with a variety of flowers including irises, rosettes and curling leaves, the hilt with diamonds set around the edges, and turquoise, coral and pearls set into the design, the sheath with two horizontal bands running across it and a loop for attachment, an inset stone at the base, later silk string

Lot Essay

A pesh kabz dagger formerly in the collection of Robert Hales has very similar polychrome enamelled silver mounts which are also attributed to 18th century Lucknow, (Robert Hales, Islamic and Oriental Arms and Armour: A Lifetime’s Passion, 2013, no. 20, p. 9).
