MOMOYAMA PERIOD (16TH CENTURY)

Negoro lacquers are traditionally associated with the Negoro Temple complex in Naka-gun, Kii province (Wakayama Prefecture) founded in the 12th century by monks of Shingon Buddhism. Negoro wares are greatly admired for their vigor, unassuming shapes and the appearance of antiquity due to the vermilion wearing through to the black lacquer.
