Each of the boxes decorated with scenery of Mount Yoshino showing mountains with blossoming cherry trees by a stream; the writing box elaborately lacquered in gold, silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and inlaid gold and silver with cherry blossoms, the underside of the lid designed with the scene “The Maiden of the Bridge” (Hashihime), Chapter 45 of The Tale of Genji, fitted with a slate inkstone, silver water dropper in the form of a butterfly, knife, ink stone holder and three brushes, the interior designed with courtiers on a nashiji ground; the stationery box decorated en suite
