The publisher Joseph Hogarth commissioned a large number of drawings of Scottish scenery from the foremost landscape artists of the day, including J.M.W. Turner, David Roberts, J.D. Harding, Joseph Nash, Horatio Macculloch, D.O. Hill, W.A. Nesfield, Sir W. Allan, Clarkson Stanfield, George Cattermore, W.L. Leitch, and Thomas Creswick. The plates are magnificent and the grandeur of the Scottish landscape seen through the eyes of such a group of artists makes this ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING TOPOGRAPHICAL BOOKS OF THE 19TH CENTURY. The present work has the second issue of the text, which is complete with the exception of the titles to vols III and IV called for by Abbey Scenery 493.
