Provenance: John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl (1755-1830, armorial bookplates).
RARE FIRST EDITION of Charlton's satire on novel-reading. 'Charlton has much in common with her fellow Minerva best-sellers. All of [William] Lane's top authors worked in the Gothic mode, providing their readers with tales of domestic persecution in quasi-exotic settings, but both contemporary and modern critics have professed to find Charlton's descriptions superior to those of her competitors ... [Rosella is] her best work' (ODNB). Block p.39; Summers p.488; ESTC T140061 recording 11 copies, only 2 of which in the British Isles (BL and Cambridge).
