A VERY FINE GOLD-MOUNTED PRESENTATION SWORD
BY THE GOLDSMITHS & SILVERSMITHS COMPANY, LONDON, LONDON ASSAY MARKS FOR 1900
With bright 31 ¾ in. (80.6 cm.) etched blade bearing the presentation inscription 'PRESENTED BY THE MERCERS' COMPANY TO MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT STEPHENSON SMYTH BADEN-POWELL, A LIVERYMAN OF THE COMPANY IN RECOGNITION OF HIS GALLANT AND SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF MAFEKING DURING THE SIEGE, WHICH EXTENDED FROM THE 12th OCTOBER 1899 TO THE 18th MAY 1900', ivory grip, 18ct gold mounts including guard the finely enamelled arms of The Mercers' Company on the outer side and Baden-Powell on the inner side, and bullion sword knot, in original scabbard with fine 18ct gold mounts cast and chased with foliage and trophies of arms heightened with enamelled rosettes and with a large enamelled 'BP' monogram on the outer side of the locket and a smaller enamelled 'BP' monogram on the inner side of the chape
