Io sono uno scultore e non un ceramista. Non ho mai girato al tornio un piatto né dipinto un vaso. Ho in uggia merletti e sfumature. Le delicatezze e le prelibate cotture dei "Copenhagen" mi annoiano. E lo stesso dico per tutti i servizi di Sèvres, porcellane biscotti ceramiche maioliche. Aborro i mistici della tecnica. Con la tecnica prodigiosa di Sèvres e Copenhagen si arriva a soddisfare il gusto delle signore e dei collezionisti. È una specie d'estasi delle cose fragili e del mezzo tono. IO cerco altro. Durante la mia lunga permanenza nei laboratori si Sèvres ho ricercato e studiato la forma. Ho continuato a modellare come nel mio studio figure e metamorfosi che pesavano quintali, le ho dipinte con forti coloriture. La mia forma plastica dai primi agli ultimi modelli non è mai dissociata dal colore. Le mie sculture sono state sempre policrome. Colorivo i gessi, colorivo le terrecotte. Colore e forma sono indissolubili, nati da un'identica necessità. La policromia ha avuto in tutti i tempi i precedenti illustri: Egiziani, Greci, Etruschi, Assiri, dai graffiti delle caverne alla scultura del Rinascimento. LUCIO FONTANA (La mia ceramica, in "Tempo", Milano, 21 settembre 1939). I am a sculptor and not a ceramicist. I have never turned a potter's wheel nor have I painted a vase. I am bored by lace and nuanced hues. The delicacies and the exquisite firings of 'Copenhagen' bore me. And I say the same for all the Sèvres services of porcelain majolica ceramic cookies. I abhor the mystics of technique. With the prodigious technique in Sèvres and Copenhagen, the taste of the ladies and collectors are satisfied. It is a sort of ecstasy in fragile things and half tone. I am looking for something else. During my long stay in the laboratories in Sèvres, I researched and studied form. I continued to model, as in my studio, figures and metamorphoses that weighed 100 kilos, I painted them with strong colors. My sculptural form from the first to the last models is never dissociated from the color. My sculptures were always polychrome. I colored the cast, I colored the terracotta. Color and form are indissoluble, conceived from an identical necessity. The polychrome had its time with illustrious precedents: Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Assyrian, from the cave drawings to Renaissance sculpture.
