Lot Essay

Van den Bergh made this quite free copy after the famous self-portrait by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) which is now in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle (see H. Vlieghe, Rubens Portraits of identified sitters painted in Antwerp, New York, 1987, no. 135). Another closely comparable drawing in which van den Bergh copied A smiling young man (Titus) by Rembrandt (1606-1669) is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (see E. van de Wetering, A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings: Rembrandt's Paintings Revisited: A Complete Survey, Dordrecht, 2015, IV, p. 664, under no. 280, fig. 2).
