Lot Essay

A study in reverse for an engraving by Jacob Louys (1595-1635) for the book Imperatores Domus Austriacae (1644), published by Pieter Soutman (Hollstein 5) (Fig.1). Soutman made the drawing after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), which is now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. P01689; M. D. Padrón, El siglio de Rubens en el Museo del Prado, Barcelona, 2010, no. 1689).
