ALKEN, Henry. Illustrations for Landscape Scenery. London: S. and J. Fuller, 1821.
Small oblong 4° (207 x 270mm). Letterpress title and 25 hand-coloured etched plates, dated and with publisher’s imprint, interleaved. (Light soiling, the last plate slightly smaller in size.) Original drab boards with printed label on front cover (rebacked); preserved in red cloth portfolio with title in gilt. Provenance: purchased in New York, 1947.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THIS RARE SKETCH-BOOK, each plate with an arrangement of small figures seen from a distance. Amateur artists were invited to pick these out for introduction into their landscapes. Among the subjects are gun-dogs, horses and carts, domestic birds, soldiers and sailors, huntsmen, other riders, labourers ploughing, harvesting and carrying. Plate 7 includes cricketers, plate 23 anglers, while the Italian banditti in plate 17 reflect the gothic taste. The number of plates appears to vary slightly between copies, the Dixon copy having 24 plates (see lot 32), and the Gloucester-Le Vivier copy 26 plates, including 2 uncoloured. Abbey Life 89 (calling for 24 plates).
