2 works in one volume, oblong 4° (250 x 353mm). Contemporary green ribbed cloth, front cover with green morocco label reading ‘Alken’s Progressive Sports’ (spine ends and corners rubbed); clamshell case in green quarter morocco, rounded spine with red morocco gilt label (spine faded). Provenance: possibly the Fitz Eugene Dixon copy, sold Anderson Galleries, January 6-7 1937, lot 64, combining both works -- purchased from Swann Galleries, 2 March 1944.

TWO HUMOROUS SERIES bound as one. Master George progresses from a mischievous boy attempting to ride a kicking donkey, and with more of a preference for pugilism than cricket, to a plausible adult doffing his hat to a lady in London’s Hyde Park. Specimens of Riding seems to follow on naturally from it by displaying the contrasting styles of riders in the city. The first work has two watermarks dated 1822-23; the second is watermarked Whatman Turkey Mill, 1821, having no title it was presumably bound from the parts issue. Dixon 64; Mellon/Snelgrove 74 & 98; Siltzer p. 70 (Specimens of Riding); Schwerdt IV, p. 4 (Master George); Tooley 46 & 51.
