2° (356 x 265mm). Half-title, 115 numbered, hand-coloured engraved plates by Gatine, Schencker and others after Vernet, Lanté, Dutailly, Isabey and others. (A few plates very lightly and evenly browned, scattered light marginal spotting, inner margin of a few plates towards end trimmed.) Contemporary green calf-backed boards with calf corners, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt, uncut(extremities rubbed, a few scuff marks); modern slipcase. Provenance: Comte de Béhague inserted (bookseller's letter explaining this copy was part of the Comte’s library) – R. Descamps Scrive (bookplate) – purchased from Rousseau-Girard, Paris, 1 March 1939.
AN ATTRACTIVE COPY OF THE SECOND EDITION, RARE COMPLETE. The work was first published in 1817 with 104 plates, it was then expanded by 11 plates in the second edition, and reprinted for a third time in 1827. The magnificent caricatures depict not only the dresses and the excesses of fashion of the time but also public entertainments such as acrobats walking the tightrope, dancing dogs, sword acrobats, and giant sledges. All plates carry the heading ‘Le Bon Genre’, and date from 1801-1822. Colas 2239; Lipperheide Xe 369 (incomplete copy); Vicaire I, 842.
