CRUIKSHANK, George. My Sketch Book. London: for the Artist by Charles Tilt, December 1834 [plates dated 1833-25 June 1836].
9 parts, oblong 4° (189 x 278mm). Hand-coloured etched title in part VI, 36 hand-coloured plates. Three original signed drawings by Cruishank loosely inserted. (Part of margin of text leaf in part 4 torn away, light, mainly marginal finger soiling.) Original printed wrappers (a little soiled); modern folding cloth box. Provenance: purchased from Parke-Bernet, 1946.
IN ORIGINAL PARTS AND CONTAINING THREE ORIGINAL SIGNED DRAWINGS BY CRUIKSHANK. The first is an early sketch for the etching on plate II in part IV; the second is a study for the etching reproduced on plate I in part V; the third is a pen-and-ink and watercolour drawing for plate I in part VI. This drawing is remarkably fine and finished. A note inserted with it states that it is ‘in fact, so finely done, that it is difficult to distinguish it from a reproduction’. Abbey Life 275; Cohn 181.
