12 hand-coloured etchings after Cruikshank, originally published two to a plate, here laid down individually on mounts and with modern wash border, 205 x 310mm; 304 x 405mm. with mounts. (‘A London Coffee House’ slightly soiled and with small areas of damage, ‘A Shooting Party’ with small piece torn away near margin, occasional spotting.) Modern lined green buckram box, etched title [?]from the original wrapper inset into box lid, longitudinal brown morocco gilt spine label. Provenance: purchased at the Woodin sale, 1940.
An unusual set of caricature etchings, in each of which two characters hold up an artist’s scroll displaying a typical scene in contemporary social life. Individual titles are as follows: ‘Half an Hour before Dinner’ and ‘Half an Hour after Supper’; ‘A Fishing Party’ and ‘A Shooting Party,’, ‘A Private Concert’ and ‘A Ball,’ ‘A Card Party’ and ‘Playing at Hazard,’ ‘A London Coffee House’ and ‘A Country Ale House,’ ‘A Tea Party’ and ‘A Rout.’ RARE AND AMUSING.
