Griffin, 1832. 25 weekly parts bound in 7, 8° (224 x 143mm). Each weekly part with engraved illustration on the first leaf, title-page with engraved vignette at end of pt. XXV. Printed in double column. (Light even browning, a few light spots.) Original printed wrappers, with engraved vignette, uncut (front wrapper of pt. I frayed, lightly soiled); modern half morocco box. Provenance: purchased at Swann Galleries, 1943.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. The work ‘gives a wealth of information on all kinds of sport. Pages 402-406 contain an account of the “Herculean Match performed by Mr. Osbaldeston at Newmarket,” when he rode 200 miles in 8 hours and 39 minutes.’ Schwerdt I, p. 159.
CRUIKSHANK, Robert illustrator -- EGAN, P. Finish to the Adventures of Tom, Jerry, and Logic, in their Pursuits through Life in and out of London. London: G. Virtue, 1830. 8° (235 x 145mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 35 plates after R. Cruikshank, wood-engraved vignette on title and 7 illustrations in the text, all but one by J.R. Marshall, the last by Sears. (Frontispiece almost detached, light offsetting from plates, lightly browned.) Crimson morocco gilt by Riviere and Son, gilt edges (joints lightly rubbed). Provenance: Reuben Jay Flick (bookplate; purchased in his sale, 15 March 1946). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. The last of the Life in London books, it 'probably gave Dickens a theme he worked up into the Pickwick Papers'. Abbey Life 284; Tooley 197.
