ALKEN, Henry. Comparative Meltonians, as They are and as They were. London: Thomas McLean, 1823.
Oblong 2° (322 x 484mm). 6 hand-coloured etched plates by G. Hunt after Alken. (Light crinkling, plates 4 and 6 with short neatly repaired tears at bottom margin.) Original printed pink wrappers, front cover with title, motto and imprint, back cover with publisher’s advertisements (rebacked and recornered, somewhat soiled); quarter black morocco clamshell box, front cover and spine both lettered in gilt. Provenance: Joseph Widener (morocco label; purchased in his sale, 28 November 1944).
WIDENER COPY OF 'ONE OF ALKEN'S MOST BRILLIANTLY COLOURED HUNTING SETS and one which is very rarely found in its original wrapper' (Schwerdt). The large 'magnificently coloured plates' contrast riders as they were, in steadfastly correct dress and with genuine consideration for the good of their horses, with the excessive zeal of riders as they are, in other words newcomers to the Meltonian hunt who dress like dandies and have no thought for their horses. The motto on title and wrapper reads: ‘All alike good, -- but time makes strange alterations,’ while the plate captions emphasise the difference in approach between the two social groups. This example of the wrapper omits the publication price of two guineas. Dixon 53: 'beautiful and excessively rare'; Mellon/Snelgrove 18; Schwerdt I, p. 13; Siltzer pp. 59 & 71; Tooley 23: 'A very rare series, among the largest and finest of Alken's plates.'
