CRUIKSHANK, (Isaac) Robert (1789-1856). The Old Road to a Fight. Exhibiting the Sporting World in all its Variety of Style and Costume along the Road from Hyde Park Corner to Moulsey Hurst. London: Sherwood, Neely and Jones, 1 September 1819.
Hand-coloured aquatint panorama by and after Robert Cruikshank, comprising title (75 x 168mm; 3 x 6 5/8 inches) and extensive panorama (75 x 3979mm; 3 x 159 inches), with contemporary linen backing. Mounted in a red morocco wallet by Zaehnsdorf, 1916.

[With:] EGAN, Pierce (1772-1849). Key to the Picture of the Fancy Going to a Fight at Moulsey-Hurst. London: R. Jones, 1819.12º (152 x 96mm). 36 pages. Wood-engraved vignette of boxers on title. Bound matching the preceding; together in a red morocco pull-off case.

A RARE PANORAMA, EVEN MORE SO COMPLETE WITH TEXT. Egan’s accompanying pamphlet was unknown to Abbey, who notes only that ‘places and people along the panorama are numbered from 1 to 42; this would appear to indicate that originally a booklet was issued with the view.’ Boxing was a sport of great attraction to Egan who published Boxiana or Sketches of Modern Pugilism in monthly parts, 1818-1824. Abbey Life 473; Hartley 589 (the key).
