MONTAGU, George (1751-1815). Ornithological Dictionary of British Birds. London: Hurst, Chance and Co., 1831. 3 volumes, 8° (211 x 135mm). Wood-engraved illustrations. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 142 HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES. (A few spots and occasional light marginal finger-soiling.) Blue morocco gilt by the Lakeside Press, Chicago (spines slightly sunfaded, light stain on front cover of vol. III). Provenance: Charles Walmesley (signature on title and front blank in vols. II & III) – purchased at Chicago Book & Art, 1 March 1932.

Second edition. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 142 plates taken from George Graves’ British Ornithology. The plates all have the imprint of George Graves, Walworth and are dated 1811-21. Montagu: Nissen IVB 642; Mullens & Swann p.410. Graves: Nissen IVB 386 (calls for 144 plates); Mullens & Swann p. 246.

[RATHBONE, Hannah Mary née Reynolds (1798-1878)]. The Poetry of Birds. Liverpool: George Smith & London: Ackermann & Co., 1833. 4° (230 x 176mm). 21 hand-coloured lithographs. (First gathering almost detached, a few scattered spots.) Contemporary blue boards, large lettering-piece, gilt edges (front hinges cracked but cords firmly holding, extremities rubbed, sides scuffed); modern morocco-backed folding box. Provenance: Sir William de Bathe (bookplate) – purchased from Marshall Field, 1 January 1931. FIRST EDITION. Nissen IVB 756; Mullens & Swann p. 485; both calling for 22 plates though in fact only 21 are listed in the index.
