Engraved vignette on title, 4 engraved head- and 2 tailpieces, historiated initials, EXTRA ILLUSTRATED with 3 engraved portraits and 2 headpieces, WITH ADDITIONAL TEXT. (Lightly browned throughout, a little stronger on title.) Contemporary crimson morocco, triple gilt fillet on sides, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, inner dentelles, gilt edges. Provenance: F.C. Brooke (initials next to collation mark, dated 20 March 1848 and inserted slip on which Hobson states: ‘F.C. Brooke copy. Bought from Quaritch’s October 1957.’)
AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE COPY WITH THE THREE TEXTUAL VARIANTS, mentioned by Brunet. In the first variant, a slip has been pasted over the last 10 lines on page 2 (A1v), followed by 8 inserted leaves (*A & **A) of which only the first and last two pages are numbered. Secondly, pages 5-16 have been replaced by 12 not numbered leaves, containing a portrait of Gutenberg, one of Johann Fust, and one engraved headpiece. The last textual variant can be found between pages 52 and 61. The 4 leaves have been suppressed and instead 9 leaves, without signatures and not numbered, have been added, containing a portrait of Ulrich Gering and an engraved headpiece. A note on the front endpaper states: ‘Mr Dibdin has a copy of this book upon large paper but without the additional leaves which are found in this, and consequently without the Portraits’. Belwo in another hand is written: ‘This is the copy referred to by Mr Gresswell in his book on Parisian Typography’. Brunet III, 724: ‘Il en existe quelques exemplaires précieux, dans lesquels sont les additions suivantes’.
