SIGNED ZHANG XIHUANG, DATED CYCLICAL RENYIN YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1662 OR 1722
The gently arched wrist rest is carved in the liu qing technique with a seal on the upper right corner reading jia zhu, 'bamboo of quality', followed by a four-line poetic inscription by the Tang dynasty poet Linghu Chu, ending with a renyin summer date and signature Xihuang, as well as two seals reading Zhang Zonglue yin, 'seal of Zhang Zonglue' and Xihuang.

Lot Essay

Zhang Xihuang, also named Zonglue, was a bamboo carver active during the late Ming to early Qing period, known to have developed the liu qing technique, where the design is formed by carving away the bamboo 'skin' either totally or partially to reveal the 'flesh' tones underneath in varying degrees.
