QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The brush pot is deeply carved in intaglio with a butterfly hovering above a large cabbage growing from the field, and an insect crawling on the broad leaf. The other side is incised with a poetic inscription followed by the signature Tong Wen, and two seals with the names Wei and Tong Wen.

Lot Essay

A bamboo brush pot carved with the same motif and poem, but with the signature of Shen Quanlin and dated to the Kangxi period, is in the collection of the Beijing Palace Museum, illlustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, pl. 21.
