FIRST EDITION, PRINTED BY FRANKLIN AND HALL. Rare. Easton, Pennsylvania, on the western side of the Delaware River, was frequently the site of peace conferences with the Indians, especially during the French and Indian War. The Delaware tribes in particular had been openly hostile to the Pennsylvania settlers for some 20 years, since Thomas Penn's infamous "Walking Purchase," seizing as much land as could be walked (or run) in a day, by which thousands of acres were claimed. At the end of this negotiation “some wine and punch was then ordered in, and the conferences were concluded with great joy and mutual satisfaction.” De Puy 44; Evans 8156; Hildeburn 1593; Miller 696; Sabin 49348.
