Later half calf over marbled boards, red morocco gilt lettering-piece (some wear, corners and spine renewed). Provenance: Laird U. Park, Jr. (1922-2001) Philadelphian, Americana collector (sold Sotheby’s New York, 29 November 2000, lot 160).
FIRST EDITION, all published, of this street-by-street directory of Philadelphia. The directory includes house numbers, names and occupations of residents. The author identifies African American residents with an “Af.” prior to the name, and also makes note of how many people died during the 1793 yellow fever epidemic at the end of each block. Prior to the index, Hogan also includes a table describing the local fire companies and their members and equipment. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, this is the only copy of this work that has sold at auction in the last 35 years. Evans 28845; Howes H-571; Spear p.274.
