COLLOT, André (1897-1976) – ANDRÉA DE NERCIAT, André-Robert (1739-1800). Les Aphrodites ou Fragments thali-priapiques pour servir à l'histoire du plaisir. [Paris: ?Librairie Denis,] 1925.
Two volumes, 4° (277 x 190mm). 143 pen-and-ink and watercolour erotic drawings by Collot [74 in vol. 1 and 69 in vol. 2], of which 13 are full-page; these drawings replacing the 30 plates by De Geetere issued with this edition. Finely bound in 20th-century raspberry red morocco, original printed wrappers bound-in, spines lettered directly in gilt, the sides with pink geometric onlays and blind-tooled dots in radiating patterns, top edges gilt (spines very subtly faded). Provenance: Gerard Nordmann (book label; his sale, Christie’s Paris, 27 April 2006, lot 11).
A UNIQUE COPY ILLUMINATED THROUGHOUT BY ANDRE COLLOT WITH FINE EROTIC WATERCOLOURS. Les Aphrodites is Andréa de Nerciat’s masterpiece and the archetypal libertine novel, mixing a lively narrative with superbly written dialogue for a menagerie of picaresque characters; the whole here enlivened by more than 140 original Collot drawings. Dutell II, 1030.
