The dedication to Zeus Thalos suggests an eastern Mediterranean origin for this stele, as such dedications are found in a number of inscriptions from this region. Steles with busts of gods in combination with oxen, with the god named as Zeus along with a local epithet, are found in the later eastern Roman empire. There is a suggestion that the depiction of Zeus as a shepherd of animals shows the influence of embryonic Christian iconography.
