A CINNABAR LACQUER BRACKET-LOBED DISH
YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368)
The shallow tray is supported on a short circular foot rising from rounded sides to an everted barbed rim. The interior with a slightly sunken centre and gently curved cavetto is covered overall with dark brown lacquer with the exception of the rim and exterior painted in metal lacquer.
6 3/4 in. (17.5 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box
Provenance
According to the original Japanese wood box, the dish was gifted from ‘Kenkou’ to the Kohou-an Temple located at the Daitokuji Temple, Kyoto, dated 20 September 1848. ‘Kenkou’ possibly refers to Tokugawa Narikatsu, also known as KenSho-in, who was a 12th generation member of the Kishu branch of the Tokugawa family
