One of the top oceanic predators from the age of the dinosaurs, since their discovery in the 18th and 19th centuries Plesiosaurs have played a prominent role in shaping our understanding and imagination of their age. In 1864 Jules Vernes vividly described a fight between one and an Ichthyosaur in his Journey to the Centre of the Earth; more recently cryptozoloogists have (dubiously!)championed plesiosaurs as an explantation of the Loch Ness monster.
